Imagine being told to rest when you’re trying to complete a work project for a promotion, figure out an experiment for research or prepare dinner for the children even if you are sick. Being told to rest in that moment might have left you annoyed or confused. How can you rest when there are things that need to be done? Rest seems opposite to what should be done. But the truth is rest is important in those situations. Rest prevents burnout. Rest resets us.
Rest (v): to be inwardly quiet, peaceful; possess the perfect peace God gives; to be free from worry, stress, anxiety (KJV)
Rest comes from God. Rest brings a peace far beyond our understanding (Hebrews 4:9-10) that allows us to sleep well at night, free of worry, knowing that God has us. Rest calls for us to let go, release control and trust that God has everything in his hands (Proverbs 3:5-6). It is funny how in those moments of rest, when we let go and surrender it all to God, we find ourselves refreshed. We gain a different perspective. We find the answers to our problems. We find healing of our mind, heart and body. We find the strength, the fuel to move forward. We have been reset.
“Rest is a weapon”
– Myles Munroe
Without rest, we become so occupied with all that is going on around us that we lose ourselves and are tossed by the waves of life. Can you imagine what would happen to you if you kept trying to prepare dinner while you are sick? Or trying to figure out an experiment with no rest? Mistakes would be made. Health would be negatively affected. Those closely connected to us would be impacted. The problem takes precedent in our life that we miss the blessings around us. We lose track of it all.
So, why don’t we take a few minutes of rest? Step into a place of true rest as you release it all and allow the peace of God to come to refresh and renew you.
